I've never actually seen it happen, but sometimes someone hides things in my shoes. It doesn't happen often enough for me to remember to check my shoes every day before putting them on, so I always find the things by putting my foot in the shoe and running my toes up against something squishy. Usually it'll be a foam ball or a toy mouse, so I think I can safely conclude that the shoe stuffer is a cat. I've probably just been lucky so far in that all of the stuffings have been inanimate. This is arguably one of the most underrated benefits of having indoor cats. Being indoors, they don't have access to many live 'gifts'.
