I tried to identify this wasp-hornet thing by comparing it to other photos, but I couldn't find a good match so I don't know what it is. In any case, it can't stay where it is.

That's an interesting looking critter. We have several wasp nests of a more common variety under the porch eve..outside the kitchen window.

Dad looked in his bug book and says it looks like a PSEUDOMASARUS VESPOIDES/mud wasp. They are common in the west.

I still couldn't find a photo match, but it has to be something common like that. Wasps don't seem to be well represented in the photo galleries.

I think that wasp might be a Pseudomasarus vespoides, a type of mud wasp. Put that on an internet search, and you will find some good pictures.
